If you’ve ever been in a toxic relationship, dealt with an addiction that wouldn’t let go, or experienced a situation so painful that it feels like it clouds every day of your life, you’ll understand how hard it is to move forward with these invisible weights pulling you back. I know this because I've been there too. I was weighed down by my past—by relationships that had gone wrong, by addictions that seemed impossible to break. I experienced a turning point when things had become too much—a spiritual release that allowed me to finally let go of the emotional and energetic ties that no longer served me. Imagine shedding these burdens and finally stepping into the future untethered. Let’s explore how.
What Is Cord Cutting?
Cord cutting is a release from the ties, the burdens, and the heavy weight of attachments that hold us back. Every connection we make—whether it’s a friend, a romantic partner, a co-worker, or even a brief encounter—creates an energetic cord between us and that person. During my shamanic medicine training, it really hit me just how much we carry with us from every interaction. Some of these cords are healthy, carrying love, support, and positive energy. But others are toxic, draining, and filled with negative energy, keeping us anchored to things we want to leave in the past.
Cord cutting doesn’t mean severing all ties to people we care about; rather, it means releasing the heavy, negative aspects of the energy that keep us from moving forward. Picture it as cutting through the chains of heavy energy while allowing the light, positive connections to remain.
How Are Energetic Cords Formed?
Energetic cords form through strong emotional experiences—whether positive or negative. When we deeply connect with someone, whether through love, anger, or fear, we create an energetic link that can last long after the actual interaction. Sometimes, even fleeting experiences with strangers can form a cord, especially if the interaction triggers a strong emotional response. These cords, over time, can become burdensome, especially if the emotions attached to them are not resolved.
When Should I Consider Cord Cutting?
Cord cutting can be a powerful tool when you feel unable to move forward in life, like something’s holding you back. Here are some signs that it may be time to consider a cord cutting ritual:
You feel drained after interacting with someone- If a person’s presence leaves you feeling emotionally exhausted, there may be an unhealthy cord draining your energy.
You’re stuck in obsessive thoughts- When you can’t stop thinking about someone or a past situation, especially if those thoughts are negative or intrusive, it’s a sign of a strong cord that needs to be cut.
You’re struggling to let go of the past- Whether it’s a breakup, a falling out with a friend, or unresolved childhood traumas, holding on to resentment or bitterness can weigh you down. Cord cutting can help release these ties so you can finally move forward.
How Do I Know if Cord Cutting Worked?
After a successful cord cutting, you’ll likely feel a sense of lightness, as if a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. The feelings of being drained, obsessive thoughts, or emotional heaviness should lessen significantly or even disappear entirely. Personally, after my first cord-cutting session, I felt like I had been carrying a heavy bag filled with resentments my entire life, and suddenly it was gone—I stood taller, breathed easier, and felt more energized than I had in years. It was like I could finally breathe without the past holding me back.
Will the Person I'm Cutting Cords With Feel the Effects?
People often ask if the person on the other end of the cord will feel the effects of the ritual. The answer is—sometimes. They may feel a sudden urge to reach out or feel a shift in the dynamic, especially if the cord being cut was one of dependence or intense emotion. It’s not uncommon for people to experience contact from the other person shortly after the ritual, but it’s important to stay grounded and recognize that this is part of the energetic release process.
The Power of Forgiveness in Cord Cutting
Forgiveness often plays a huge role in the success of a cord-cutting ritual. It’s not always easy, and it’s certainly not mandatory, but forgiveness can be incredibly freeing. It’s the ultimate act of release—letting go of resentment not for the other person, but gifting the peace to yourself. Sometimes, the heaviest cords are tied by our unwillingness to forgive, and by allowing ourselves that grace, we make the cutting of those cords that much more powerful.
Moving Forward Untethered
Cord cutting is not about forgetting the past or pretending it didn’t happen. It’s about reclaiming your energy, your independence, and your emotional freedom. It’s about letting go of what no longer serves you so that you can step fully into your future—unburdened, untethered, and empowered. Whether it’s a relationship that ended badly, an addiction that once controlled you, or past traumas that still weigh you down, cutting those energetic cords is a powerful step in your journey to healing.
Untethered from the past is the only route forward. It’s time to step into your future, free from the chains of the past.
